If you’ve visited us over the past few weeks, you’ve probably noticed there is a lot of noise coming from the back-end of the building, and that tarps and protection have gone up over some windows. What you can’t see, but can definitely hear, is work being done; it’s part of the first phase of Central Library’s renovation, which began in early January and is projected to be completed over the next two years.
You may have also noticed that we’re going through some pains with our elevators and that even our quiet study spaces aren’t exactly quiet during construction. We appreciate your patience while we do the important work to fix all of our elevators, install new sprinkler and fire protection systems, and build out new spaces that will ultimately result in better service to you. Over the next several weeks, check this blog to learn more about each space.
Here are some highlights of the first phase of Central Library’s construction:
- The new Major Owens Welcome Center in our front lobby, where you can check-out and return materials, get a library card, and find out about library programs and events
- A new Popular Library that will feature curated collections by our staff and a more browsable “bookstore” experience to help you discover your next read
- A new Civic Commons which will be home to the Passport Services Center, IDNYC and the Computer Center – with a new entrance off Flatbush Avenue for ease of entry into the building
- A new, and bigger, space for the Business & Career Center featuring multiple meeting rooms and program spaces
- Upgrades including refurbished elevators, restored wood paneling and replaced lobby flooring
- A redesigned and efficient Materials Handling/Sorting room to help us get books to you
The first space being built out, and the source of the noise coming from our Flatbush Avenue wing, is a new Materials Handling Center. Check out our next post for more information on what happens in the Materials Handling Center.
