Over the next few years, Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Library will undergo a major renovation to make needed improvements and transform our public spaces to better serve the residents of Brooklyn. The first piece of that renovation begins this month with work on the Central Library Plaza.
Beginning the week of April 16th construction fencing will be installed along the Eastern Parkway side of the plaza so that crews can replace cracked or broken flagstone and update the plaza’s electrical and broadband wiring. Outside the fencing there will be more localized work on replacing and resetting stones. While this work is happening, patrons will need to use the center stairs or the Flatbush stairs or ramp to enter the building. The bike racks on the Eastern Parkway side will be unavailable during this phase, however, additional racks are located along the Flatbush side of the building.
In mid-May, crews will reopen the restored section along Eastern Parkway and move the fencing to the center stair portion of the plaza until the project wraps up at the end of June.
Throughout the process the main entrance will always be accessible and at least one accessible ramp will be available to visitors.
Once completed, the plaza will be restored to its original, iconic design but with safer and more accessible stairs and surfaces. The upgrades will better support everything from Wi-Fi usage to concerts. Thank you for your patience during the renovation – and we hope to see you at Plaza Swing Series, which starts July 11!
Renovation of the Central Library Plaza is made possible by a grant from the New York State Education Department’s State Aid for Library Construction fund.
